Spring Break provides a break from the stresses of school for one week. Student activities variate from vacations to hanging out with friends. The break can allow students to recharge and get focused on the last 9 weeks of the school year.
When teachers feel the allotted time for schoolwork in a semester is insufficient students are given copious amounts of homework to do over the break.
A teacher might tell a student that the assignment has to be completed over break because that part of the curriculum otherwise might not be covered. A teacher should realize the point of this break is to get away from their homework. The teacher should be able to plan around the idea they are given large amounts of time to cover all of the material during a semester.
A teacher might also want to keep a students mind fresh, so they don’t forget what they are learning. Teachers can do this through a quick review and once students start learning again they will retain the information.
Spring break is also a time for teachers to take a week off from work. Even teachers who decide to grade papers during the break have more free time to reset and get ready for the last stretch of the school year. Teachers can argue that if they have to do even a little work students should as well.
Teachers are also given the 18 week period to grade. A teacher may argue that they have to use the break to grade papers. Why can’t they finish their grading during the 18 weeks and give themselves a break? Everyone procrastinates and uses some form of entertainment to get away from doing work. Even teachers have some time to work that they don’t use.
Teachers also should realize that families use spring break to go out of town. If a family is using the time to bond for an entire week why should a student have to use the time to worry about school. A week long vacation while having to stress about doing homework while there isn’t enjoyable for students and I doubt a teacher on vacation would want to grade there.
