12 years has past since the world changing attack on September 11, 2001, yet the events on that historic day are still not forgotten.
The nation grieves together every year on this special day, a rare burst of patriotism busting out in communities all across the country. From news programs to rallies to a simple half mass of the American flag, a sense of pride in America that is more easily identified on this tragic day.
Yet, here at Parkway Central, little effort was made in support of remembering 9/11. The American flag flying outside stood at normal height, a moment of silence never came. The only way students could differentiate this day from all others is if a teacher or peer pointed it out.
Not one effort was made to link the school together to remember this devastating and world-changing event, and, personally, I think it’s sad. As a part of the United States Education system, we failed to acknowledge one of the events that most greatly altered our country.
While I understand that our school is home to great ethnic diversity and involves students from all different faces of the Earth, it seems both sad and strange we would fail to remember 9/11 together.
“We will always remember” is a saying constantly heard in regard to memorializing tragedies, but when we fail to make an effort to remember as a community, we risk forgetting our past.
