In the 3 issues of the Corral thus far, I have reviewed a different restaurant each time. I wanted to pick some restaurants that students around school don’t usually talk about, but I wanted to pick places that had potential for students to talk about. I chose 2 restaurants that are around around a mile away from school so that students could maybe discover a place in close proximity. I then chose a place on the campus of Saint Louis University that people need to know about if they attend a SLU Basketball game. Here are the 3 places I went:
Classic Red Hots
Nestled in the shopping center off Woods Mill and Olive lies Classic Red Hots. Listed on Google Maps as 1.1 miles away from school, it is surprising that I have not heard more about the restaurant from people around the school. With a large menu, Classic Red Hots has many types of food ranging from hot dogs to gyros to sandwiches of all sorts. As I waited for my food, I noticed the sketchy atmosphere. The cash register was barely functioning and the cashier had difficulty working it. Along with that, the kitchen looked very greasy, and in the too-cramped dining room, there were expired ketchup bottles at the condiment table. These things made me cringe and reconsider eating this meal. On top of that, the soda from the soda machine tasted funny. The atmosphere and the wait for the food frustrated me, but when I finally received my order and sunk my teeth into the hot dog, it was worth it.
Satchmo’s
Satchmo’s Bar & Grill is located on Olive between Woods Mill and 141. Some students have heard of it, but it seems most students haven’t. I have theories why this restaurant isn’t jam-packed every night. Despite having great food, its atmosphere isn’t the same as nearby Kriegers or a Buffalo Wild Wings. It doesn’t have TV’s everywhere, and it isn’t as clean and family friendly. There is a smoky smell and old feeling wooden floors. They didn’t have a host or hostess greet me, as it was a self-seating night. This isn’t a bad thing at all, many times these places serve up the best food. These places tend to have the best entertainment. Satchmo’s often has bands come in and play live music which makes it a fun place.
Everything I ate had common themes. A crispy-crunchy outside with a warm and delectable inside. One flavor doesn’t overpower the rest of the food, making every ingredient work in unison with the rest.
Most students don’t know about Satchmo’s, and they need to. This restaurant is a hidden gem that must be considered when wanting good food and a good time.
Humphfrey’s
Located on Laclede Avenue on the campus of Saint Louis University lies Humphrey’s Restaurant & Tavern. Humphrey’s opened in 1976 and has been a hot spot on SLU’s campus ever since. It is known for reasonably priced food and good times, especially if you are of age. They serve generic bar food, but they have a few unique signature items. Humphrey’s has a great atmosphere with TV’s and arcade games dispersed all over. This is a great place to eat and kick back relax and watch a game. Overall, Humphrey’s is a very good restaurant if you are looking for bar food with a festive, college like atmosphere. It isn’t worth the trip out to SLU for dinner, but if you are watching a Billikens game this winter, you absolutely need to stop by Humphrey’s to be served good food and a good time.
