I love all different genres when it comes to movies. However, whenever I hear a new rom-com is coming out, I know I have to go see it. When I saw the trailer for Five Feet Apart directed by Justin Baldoni, I couldn’t wait till this movie came out into the theaters. Not only did the trailer intrigue me but when I saw some of my favorite actors including Cole Sprouse, Haley Lu Richardson, and Moises Arias, I knew that I was going to love this movie.
As I expected to go into this movie with the storyline it portrayed, I knew it was probably going to be a tear-jerker. This is about two teenagers, Stella, and Will, who have the respiratory disease of cystic fibrosis and meet in a hospital. The two have tensions at first because Stella is more responsible and worried about treating her sickness. Whereas Will on the other hand, just wanted to be normal and rarely took his treatments. The two make a pact that they will always be for each other along the journey to make sure they are always taking their medicine so they can try and be healthier. The two begin to fall in love and from there you will have to see the movie on your own to see what happens with Stella and Will’s love story.
After I saw the movie I knew that it would probably be good to read the book and see how the two would compare and in my opinion, I think the director did a pretty excellent job with the overall portrayal of what Rachael Lippincott was aiming to show. The movie not only gives an excellent viewpoint on issues in the medical world that are not commonly viewed towards the public and bringing awareness to these topics which I believe is very important and they did an excellent job at.
Also, I think was of my favorite things about this movie is the casting. I have been watching many of these actors since I was younger and I think they excellently portrayed their characters as best as anyone could. I think the movie and actors did a great job at not only displaying what life with a sickness would look like but also just life as a teenager in general and the difficulties that go along with it.
Before I saw the movie I expected it to be a lot like the teenage rom-com movie and book The Fault in Our Stars. This movie also includes two teenagers who are sick with cancer and fall in love and in my opinion, it is one of the saddest movies I have ever watched. When I walked into the theatre I expected Five Feet Apart to be extremely similar to The Fault in Our Stars but it was completely different. If you want the romance aspect or are interested somewhat in medical related topics, this is the perfect movie for you. Also, I think although the movies are different, if you enjoyed the Fault in Our Stars, you would definitely enjoy this movie as well.
In the end, I think this movie portrayed the message that no matter what you are going through, there are always people in your life who are willing to be there for you and to always keep fighting to live because you never know when one small thing could change everything. Just like how these kids with cystic fibrosis were living completely normal lives until they were diagnosed and they never lived the stereotypical “normal” life again. Overall, I think that if you are interested in rom-coms that are also extremely sad, at least in my opinion, I would really recommend you watch this movie. Even if you aren’t typically interested in romantic movies, I think this movie definitely portrays topics that are important for society to educate themselves about. I would probably rate this movie a 4 out of 5 horseshoes. However, if you are planning on watching this movie, definitely bring a box of tissues along with you.
