Varsity girls tennis looks to build off of last year’s second place state finish but is having to adjust to the loss of former impact seniors.
Head Coach Dave Fuhrig continues to have post-season aspirations.
“We want to improve from match to match and try to make a run, once in the district playoffs,” Fuhrig said.
Although the Colts are missing several key seniors from last year, many underclassmen who have been called up to the varsity squad are looking forward to a strong finish while enjoying every bit of the experience.
“The upperclassmen do a great job of having fun with us while also giving us tips on how to improve our game,” said sophomore Anna Kleydman.
Furhig said he is looking forward to watching the younger players develop.
“We have a lot of young talent, and hopefully this year we can help gain these players some experience,” Fuhrig said. “One of our goals is to build this young talent so we’re able to make another state run.”
Senior captains Amanda Truong and Joy Yang said they are simply trying to get all hands on deck for another run at the state tournament.
One of Troung’s main challenges, she said, is to reach out to everyone on the team.
“I try to be a good role model for my teammates and, hopefully, a figure to look up to,” Troung said.
In regard to once more reaching state, Truong stressed the idea of the quality of competition in their future.
“We can’t take any team for granted,” Truong said. “It was difficult to place second in state last year, and it will be difficult this year.”
