Having doubled in size, the girls’ golf team is escalating this season.
“Our program is expanding [because] girls are having fun and bringing their friends,” Assistant Coach Bev Palmer said.
Every day after school the girls play 9 holes at the Four Seasons golf course. They bond everyday spending lots of time together.
“I wanted to join the golf team because it’s a fun sport and I’m very relaxed when playing after a stressful day of school,” junior Brittany Gregory said.
The coaches divide the girls up into one group of four and two groups of three. They rotate around the groups, working on the basics.
“It’s amazing how someone who has never picked up a golf club before August can be hitting 150 yard shots in 10 weeks,” Palmer said.
Although young the team is improving quickly and will get older as there are no seniors on the team.
This year the team has 6 girls of 10 who never played the game before. With two freshmen, six sophomores, and two juniors, Head Coach Todd Pannett anticipates a return to the state championship, where sophomore Elizabeth Leath finished 35th last year.
“What is a bad round for her now was a good round for her last year,” Pannet said. “She’s progressed.” Pannett expects that she will finish as one of the top 20 competitors this year in the state competition.
