Just four weeks into the season, the Rams have already tied the amount of wins from last year. The team is fighting on every down and pushing for every yard. Credit must be given to where credit is due; Jeff Fisher is turning this franchise in a completely new direction. The team is now 2-2 on the season, with a quality win last week over the Seattle Seahawks.
In addition to solid play from the team, fans were excited to welcome back the men in black and white. At last, the National Football League reached an agreement with the referees and the regular officials were back out on the field. The referees received a warm welcome from the stadium as they walked out onto the field for the first time this season. We can finally focus on football instead of worrying about
The game got off to rough start with the Seattle offense, led by rookie quarterback Russell Wilson, marched down the field with ease. They capitalized in the Rams red zone with Marshawn Lynch breaking tackles to sprint into the end zone for a touchdown.
Unlike past years, the fans were able to help the team bounce back. With wrestle superstar John Cena leading the clap on the big screen, fans pushed the team to fight back. As time wound down in the first quarter, rookie kicker Greg Zuerlein was sent in to attempt a Rams record field goal from 58 yards.
The kick not only was good, but it cleared the uprights with room to spare. The crowd erupted when the record was announced and Zuerlein celebrated with teammates. With the quarter coming to an end, the momentum was swinging in the Rams favor. In the second quarter, the Rams seized the opportunity and ran one of the most unique plays fans have seen in years.
With a fourth down upcoming on the Seahawks two yard line, head coach Jeff Fisher sent out the field goal team. When the play started, placeholder John Hekker threw the ball to a wide open Danny Amendola along the Rams sideline. The team had pulled trick play on the Seahawks, giving them a 10-7 lead.
The defense continued to push and came up with another clutch stop giving Greg Zuerlein a chance to continue his perfect season so far. With a 48 yard field goal easily through the uprights, the Rams held a 13-7 lead going into halftime. This team continues to demonstrate the desire to fight and win football games.
The team began the second half with the football and were stopped short of a first down at the 43 yard line. Fisher sent out the field goal team. Fans jumped to their feet in anticipation of the 60 yard field goal they were about to witness. Yet again, Zuerlein did not disappoint and broke the Rams field goal record for the second time Sunday. The rookie kicker has quickly earned the respect and love of the Rams community.
Zuerlein went on to kick another field goal to go four of four on the day and secure a Rams victory. The Rams had stopped the Seahawks cold with a final score of 19-13 and improve to 2-2 on the season. In a week where the referees took center stage, the Rams proved they are a totally different squad from last year.
I can only imagine what is to come from our player of the game Greg Zuerlein. Not only did he break his own record, but he cleared the field goal with plenty of room to spare. Watch out for the Rams who appear as motivated as ever to prove they are a contender. The best part about the season so far is that we are always in field goal range.
