Attendance isn’t just about being present in class; it’s also a crucial factor in students’ academic journey and overall school experience. In Parkway Central, math and computer science teacher Peter Papulis is responsible for managing unexcused absences and detentions. He explains the school’s policies and strategies.
“Missing school means that students are missing critical presentations, discussions, and opportunities for feedback which can lead to poorer academic performance,” Mr. Papulis said. “Absence policy is straightforward yet impactful: each unexcused absence results in a 1-hour detention.”
This consequence is part of a broader effort to instill the importance of regular attendance among students and parents.
“The automatic email generator also alerts the admin about those who have unexcused absences,” Papulis said.
Julia Stillwell, the detention room supervisor, elaborates on how it affects students’ academic performance and school life.
“Missing school means missing out on critical lessons, discussions, and feedback,” Ms. Stillwell said. “It can lead to poorer academic performance and even make students ineligible for extracurricular activities they cherish.”
To address these challenges, grade-level administrators engage with students facing frequent unexcused absences, offering support and guidance to overcome obstacles.
“Grade level administrators and other support staff will problem solve with the individual student,”Papulis said.
Linking attendance to privileges like sports eligibility has been a game-changer. Stillwell recalls success stories where this connection significantly reduced unexcused absences.
“When students realize attendance isn’t just about class—it’s about their passions like sports—it motivates them to be present,” stillwell said
Detention isn’t merely a punishment; it’s a chance for reflection and growth. In Room 504, students find a structured environment to complete school work and reflect on their choices.
“As students arrive, they understand the importance of accountability,” Stillwell said. “We guide them through reflection exercises and provide a supportive space to catch up on missed work.”
Reflecting on their experiences, both Papulis and Stillwell stressed the significance of attendance in shaping students’ success.
“To avoid the consequence of unexcused absences (which is detention), do not be absent, unexcused, from class,” Mr. Papulis said.
As the day draws to a close, Room 504 echoes with students’ gratitude—a testament to Central High’s commitment to nurturing responsible, engaged learners.
“Every day counts. Your presence here opens doors to endless opportunities and achievements.” Stillwell said.
