Most people know that one person who does, or used to, sit down on Sunday mornings with a cup of coffee and a pen or a pencil doing the crossword in the back. Maybe those people looked forward to that crossword or a certain column or a preview of that day’s sports action; nonetheless Sunday print is an endangered species.
The internet is killing these traditions. People are going on their smartphones to look at the Sunday news, not sitting down and reading the Sunday paper. People can go so fast that the only time they are able to read is on a mobile device at their kid’s soccer game or in the car or they listen on the radio.
When I sit down with a nice breakfast at my kitchen table on a Sunday morning, I read about what’s going on in our increasingly transient world. I find it relaxing, and it is a way for me to calm down before the hustle and bustle of the rest of my day.
It has been a common thought for a while that print newspapers are going out of style, so to speak. The Sunday faithfuls, as I will call them, are becoming few and far between. I only do it about twice a month. I simply am not at home to have time to sit back, relax, and read about what’s going on in my town or city or country for that matter.
I am not saying that the Internet needs to fly South and not come back for the summer. Honestly, I am just stating a simple fact, not even saying that it needs to change. The Sunday paper is a national pastime. The American news landscape is changing, and the Sunday paper is just one of many former staples diminishing from our ever changing lives.
The Sunday paper has everything you need. It has the sports news you crave. It has the financial happenings you watch. It has the entertainment reviews you find so useful to live in the area. The internet loads slow sometimes. The internet sometimes is down. The internet is sometimes inaccessible due to lack of service.
You can read the Sunday paper anywhere and anytime. There is no need to buffer or wait for a page to load. All you have to do is flip a page or two to get where you want to be. Reading the Sunday paper is something I think everyone should do. It will save your eyes from the phone light too.b
