Varsity cheer leading brings home the Missouri State Championship in the Super-large division after a deduction free performance. The Colts scored higher than the second place Smithville Warriors, their only opponent after the Francis Howell squad was forced to drop out of competition.
“It’s really exciting [to finish first at state],” junior Christina Wilson said. “These girls haven’t won state before so it’s kind of a big deal for us.”
The squad of 23 competed without junior, Meghan Schwandner after she suffered a foot injury casusing her to have surgery nearly a week before the competition. Coach Sandra Schuler says that she is pleased with the way that the girls responded.
“We had to hurry and make changes, but the girls all came together and pulled it off,” Schuler said. “This was a work in progress. All of the dedication these girls put in the past few years has really paid off.”
According to Schuler, the lone seniors, Lauren Skelly and Melanie Gavril were a major part of the colt’s success.
“They have certainly taken responsibility for leading this team. From the small events to the uniforms worn, they have organized a lot this year,” Schuler said.
The first place finish marks the third time the Colts have finished on top since 2000, claiming their last victory in 2002. The University of Missouri’s Hearnes Center hosted the state meet on Saturday Oct. 20.
