For many victims of bullying, it feels like no one sympathizes with them or is taking any action to put a stop to the issue. Despite this conception, one group, Superintendent Social Justice Leadership Advisory Council, or SSJLAC, has plans to help.
The SSJLAC is a group of girls who address and try to solve social injustices. The current group is comprised of senior Carli Rabon, junior Rumbi Majee, and sophomores Taylor Thompson and Sydney Parks-Smotherson, and is headed by assistant principal Dr. Carletta Harlan.
“Bullying is a social justice issue that we are, as well as the district is addressing,” the group said in a statement.
The girls not only recognize the problem, but have plans to form support systems for those students who are dealing with bullying.
“One way we are planning on bringing social cohesion to our school is by dispersing issue boxes in places where students will feel comfortable sharing issues they have or see,” the group said. “From this, issue forums can be held in order to begin to address these issues.”
The group hopes to not only offer an outlet for individual victims of bullying, but to help resolve the issue in the school as a whole.
“We are hoping that over time, we will be able to see these social challenges begin to fade and a positive change will be made,” the group said.
