If you hear some smooth trumpet melodies coming from the music wing, it is probable that these tunes come from the trumpet of junior Bryan Dinman.
Dinman began playing trumpet in sixth grade, and chose the instrument because his father played trumpet. Recently, Dinman earned a first chair jazz band position and a 6th chair concert band position in and all-around St. Louis band. While Dinman is aware of his talent, he did not expect to make first chair.
“I was excited when I made it. I knew I was going to get in the band but making 1st chair in jazz band was a shock,” Dinman said.
Mr. Doug Hoover, band teacher, was also excited at the news of Dinman securing such great positions in the bands.
“I was proud and excited when I heard. I was slightly surprised though, because first chair requires high range and he is usually a ride player,” Hoover said.
Dinman has indeed noticed his growth in his instrument over the past three years.
“I feel like I’ve improved, in jazz band especially,” Dinman said.
Mr. Hoover also notes Dinman’s improvement and success in his craft.
“I have noticed improvement. He is a diligent worker, he’s disciplined in his approach, and it pays off,” Hoover said.
Besides having played the trumpet since middle school, Dinman plays for enjoyment. Dinman has a fondness not only for playing in bands but also bonding with the people in them.
As for his future, Dinman wants to have a career involving his talent or helping others expand their abilities with music.
“I’m planning on going into music, whether it has to do with music education or trumpet I’m not sure,” Dinman said.
