The first time I saw Amy Camp I was searching for someone unique to interview for my much needed last minute online story so Ms. Stepanek would not disown me from Newspaper. I was rushing into the library to begin my quest when I spotted a curly haired girl lavishly eating a fruit cup in the “quiet section” near the books. Slowly changing my direction and slowing down my pace- to not seem super anxious- I walked over.
I was greeted instantaneously with an exuberant, “Hi! I’m Amy Camp!” I checked off talkative on my mental checklist of what composes a good interviewee and decided to give it a whirl. I told her my dire situation and she cheerfully sat and voiced she was a willing participant. Without delay, Amy Camp began to rattle off her unique life story starting from the very beginning.
First of all, she said, “Unlike most children, I was not born in a hospital; I was born at home all natural on my mother’s bed!” Trying not to gape, but instead to show sympathetic encouragement so she would continue talking, I asked her about her life growing up. She told me she has three siblings, all born the same way might I add, and as a little girl she was open, optimistic, and mustard-yellow. I never did find out what she meant by mustard yellow because she quickly rattled off more interesting tidbits that my wrist tried to keep up with. But, I guess that is just one more way that Amy Camp is unique.
She does not like normal juice. Instead, every single day, she mixes water, orange juice, and frozen chunks of fruit to create what she calls the “perfect combination!” Otherwise, it is way too sugary. Trying to get a better read on such a fun, interesting, individual, I posed what her favorite hobbies were. She replied “Pinterest, laughter, and origami” According to self-witness, she said she is a pro and can take on any origami challenge. She said she doesn’t like to follow the so called “normal.”
For an example, she hasn’t been to a school football game for two years. She said, “Do I like playing football? Absolutely, but watching it is another matter.” Also, she finds the library a more peaceful spot for lunch. The downside is every day she has to secretly fight for Real Simple magazine with all the librarians that have the same desire.
My mind was in awe by her original unique responses that she thought of naturally, and altogether I found Amy Camp so hard to put together. I finally asked her my last question. Staring straight at her, as if in search for the hidden key, I asked, what is one thing you live by? She said, very seriously, “Well, I will always, always, wear socks with my Toms.”
