After going into halftime scoreless, four goals managed to make it to the back of the net in the last 30 minutes of play. Unfortunately for the Colts (1-4), all of the points were in favor of the visiting Francis Howell Vikings (4-2).
Junior forward, Christie Bergesch had a chance to put the Colts on top with two minutes to go in the first half when she headed the ball off of the goalkeeper’s hands and beyond the crossbar on a corner kick.
“It was a great cross by Molly Cagle. I had my head on it and I thought that it was going in” Bergesch said. “When I looked up, everyone was cheering and I couldn’t believe she saved it.”
Junior forward, Ali Jaeger put the Vikings on the board with 29 minutes to play in the game. This was the first second half possession on the offensive side of the midfield line for Howell. Jaeger added a second goal seven minutes later.
According to Bergesch, the Colts energy began to fade after the goals.
“I just think that we lost our confidence after they got those goals” Bergesch said. “To see them capitalize on their one opportunity that they had was really frustrating.”
Among the chatter heard on the field was constant complaining about the officiating from both teams. Two yellow cards were given out for unsportsmanlike conduct. The first credited to Howell’s Jenna Vaught with 35 minutes to go.
Central head coach, John Theobald took the second in the last ten minutes of play.
The Colts will travel to University City to take on the Lions at 4:15 on Tuesday.
