After playing Fort Zumwalt West to a combined 20 run hitter’s duel, the Colts fell to the Jaguars 11-9. Zumwalt West led 7-5 entering the fifth inning when sophomore, Ben South drove home Jordan Goldenberg. Sam Riley crossed the plate in the sixth as a pinch runner when Goldenberg singled, tying the game.
Austin Verschoore was the catalyst in the Jaguar’s seventh inning rally, hitting a solo shot to right center. Zumwalt West added three more runs to take a four run lead, their largest of the night.
In the bottom of the inning, the Colts loaded the bases but could only manage to score two runs.
Goldenberg went 4-4 with a double, triple and a stolen base. He started the game in right field as South was catching in his varsity debut.
“Right now, our best team hitting and defensively is with South behind the plate and with me in right” Goldenberg said. “I hit the ball well today. Maybe it’s because I was in right field, maybe because I was seeing the ball well. Whatever it is, I hope that I keep doing it.”
Junior, Johnny Naughton put the Colts on the board in the second inning with a three run homerun to give Central a 3-1 lead.
“They gave the steal sign so I’m not 100 percent sure if I was supposed to swing or not” Naughton said. “As I was getting to first I could see it going out. It felt like I got it pretty good.”
Connor Kraus started the game on the mound for the Colts, pitching three and one third innings, allowing one earned run.
After allowing a run in the first, Kraus went on to retire the next five batters in order saying that he “felt pretty good” after solving some mechanical problems.
Central stranded a total of 13 runners on base.
Naughton said that it was a difficult loss but looks forward to competing tomorrow.
“It is tough coming back and not being able to pull through” Naughton said. “The cards didn’t fall our way but we did our best and we hope that we can come back tomorrow and get a big win.”
The Colts are back at it tomorrow afternoon, hosting the Kirkwood Pioneers in Suburban South Conference play with the first pitch scheduled for 4:15.
