After nearly seven years away from music, pop and R&B singer Justin Timberlake returned to the music industry in 2013 with the release of his album, The 20/20 Experience.
Timberlake debuted his first single “Suit & Tie” on January 15 and followed it up with a performance with Jay-Z at the 2013 Grammy Awards. The single peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100. On February 11, Timberlake released the second single of the album, “Mirrors” which has so far reached 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100. When the album was released on March 15, it debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 968,000 copies, his second number one album and best selling debut album. (Source: Billboard.com)
Here’s a look into the tracks on the album:
1. “Pusher Love Girl” – Timberlake incorporates rap into a song filled with falsettos in the chorus.
2. “Suit and Tie” – Jay-Z and Timberlake team up on the first single of the album to mix Timberlake’s soul with Jay-z’s hip-hop.
3. “Don’t Hold the Wall” – The first dance/true upbeat song on the album that suggests that you should be dancing rather than standing by the wall.
4. “Strawberry Bubblegum” – Timberlake compares his romance to strawberry bubblegum in this song.
5. “Tunnel Vision” – Timberlake has tunnel vision for a certain girl in his life in this song.
6. “Spaceship Coupe” – Love song with a metaphor about taking a girl to outer space.
7. “That Girl” – This is the shortest song on the album where Timberlake sings with his band.
8. “Let the Groove Get In” – Another upbeat song with catchy lyrics. This is a great dance song.
9. “Mirrors” – This song is dedicated to Timberlake’s wife. It is the second single on the album.
10. “Blue Ocean Floor” – Filled with emotion, this is slowest song on the album. It displays Timberlake’s soft vocal ability.
“‘Mirrors’ is my favorite song on the album because it has a catchy tune and the words are easy to learn so you can sing along,” junior Annie Kister said. “I think [this album] has better quality than some of his other songs because there is more variation and the messages in the songs aren’t gender specific.”
“My favorite song is ‘Suit and Tie’ because its just a fun song all around and I hear it most often,” junior Shannon Long said. “I feel like his songs are kind of girly though and guys tend to listen to more hard-core types of music.”
All in all this album was completely satisfying. Although the songs are very long, with 7 songs over 7 minutes, they incorporate catchy beats throughout and fill up the time wisely. Timberlake should be applauded for keeping his style in a time where music is changing towards wider use of computerized beats and less use of real instruments. Even though “Suit and Tie” was the first song released from the album, it has the weakest lyrics, but overall every other song had a great meaning. Timberlake picks up where he left off in 2006 with an album that will leave listeners satisfied until the second part of the album is released later this year.
