On average, Central uses 700,000 gallons of water per month, hitting 1 million during the fall sports seasons. The school participates in several water saving methods, including dual flush toilets, rainwater retention in the new science wing, drought resistant plants, changing faucets to a “low-flowing aerator” to go from using 2.2 gallons per minute to 0.5 gallons per minute, and recently installed turf field which does not require water.
Each year, hourly employees–such as custodians–go through training that now includes water retention information, such as proper disposal of storm water and sewage water. Custodians use about 200 gallons a day for cleaning, with more in the summer because the carpets are cleaned.
The newly installed automatic water bottle fillers have no filters even though there’s a light on them that says “filter status.” This indication has no significance to the quality of the water.
