If senior Damund Huntley had to describe himself in one word, it would be “enthusiastic.” He has approached his high school career just as he has any other situation in his life: with a huge amount of energy and personality.
“In order to have people want to be around you, you’ve got to be confident,” Huntley said.
With that confidence, Huntley said his other strong personality trait is the ability to talk to anyone and say exactly what he feels. He even feels it has helped get rid of the tension among people.
“It’s never given me trouble, just laughs and when people laugh they relax,” he said.
For instance Huntley said he has little sympathy for students who live close to school who complain of being tired in the morning.
“I mean, y’all live a hop and a skip away from school, and I had to wake up at 5:30 this morning,” Huntley said.
Huntley carried this honesty into his participation with High Steppers, on which he was once the only male member.
“It was an experience. I mean it was a lot of fun and I love my girls, but sometimes there was too much estrogen in the room,” Huntley said.
One of his former teammates is self-proclaimed diva senior Janese Johnson. Johnson said the two of them get along so well because of the length of their connection.
“I just see so much of myself in him. I mean we’ve been friends since sixth grade, so we’ve kind of made each other,” Johnson said.
Huntley said he also demands respect from those around him.
“I consider myself a nice person, but I’ve got to be respected – and I don’t play,” Huntley said.
When asked to consider his favorite moment of high school, his choice fit with his personality. It was one where he could perform, make people laugh and enjoy himself.
“I loved participating in two Mr. PCH pageants,” he said. “That was one of the most fun things I’ve done.”
