Ultimate frisbee has not been a sport offered at Parkway Central until the spring of last year when a couple of students with a passion for the sport decided to form a team.
“This is our first year so I’m hoping to get some experience and win some games,” junior Ben Schenberg said.
The boys have been trying to start a team for two years now but have just received the approval in the spring of last year. Schenberg gives a large amount of credit on the formation of the team to junior Bill Hague who is the manager and coach.
“Bill took the initiative and got us the team and the league,’ Schenberg said. “If it had not been for him we wouldn’t have a team.
The ultimate frisbee team known as the Perpetual Motion Squad is a club team that plays for a league. As of now they do not have a sponsor but they will be playing through the school in the spring.
“I would be lying if I didn’t say we thought we could bring ultimate frisbee to Central by ourselves,” junior Mitchell Weinstein said. “We knew it would be a lot of work, which has and will pay off.”
The Perpetual Motion Squad practices three times a week on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday. These practices are led by Hague who teaches offense, defense, and techniques as well as setting up drills and occasionally sprints.
“It’s great to see everyone, myself included, improve over the last few weeks and hopefully cooperate once games start,” Hague said.
There are about twelve people on the team but Huage would like to have more members next season.
“I want to get everyone signed up, have a winning season this fall, get a sponsor for the spring and go to the state championship by the end of the 2014 season,” Hague said.
