Walking into the Commons on Tuesday, Oct. 29, you could see a group of Student Council members standing by the stairs, with one of them holding a microphone. This is not a very uncommon occurrence, and many students didn’t notice anything unusual was going on. But, unbeknownst to a large amount of those eating their lunch, Mix it Up Day was happening.
Mix it Up Day is supposed to be an event in which students from different grades meet and interact. Students are encouraged to get in groups with a member from every grade in them to answer trivia questions with the incentive of getting free shirts or pizza. While it’s a good idea in theory, from what I saw during the lunches, very few students seemed interested in the event taking place.
It seemed like those that were interested were doing it only in the hopes of getting a prize, not so they could meet people outside of their group of friends, and that even the few groups of people participating consisted of friends from different grades that got together so that they could answer the questions. And while there were a few participants, the prizes were not encouraging to make a lot of students want to join in.
Also, in previous years sweatshirts promoting Mix it Up Day could be bought and some promotion was done prior to the event. Also balloons and colorful signs were put up to make it obvious the event was going on. This year, there was no decorations and no advertising done, so many students had no idea the event was taking place even after entering the Commons for lunch.
Mix it Up Day could provide a good opportunity for students to branch out and get to know students from different grades. Unfortunately, it didn’t manage to do that this year, which leaves a lot of room for improvement.
