Set in the late 1970’s, “American Hustle” chronicles the intricate experiences of a con man, Irving Rosenfeld (played by Christian Bale), and his partner Sydney Prosser (played by Amy Adams).
Rosenfeld and Prosser begin their scamming business small and discreet, but soon find the unwanted attention of the FBI, specifically agent Richie Di Maso (played by Bradley Cooper). Now under pressure from the government, Rosenfeld and Prosser must assist in cracking down on corruption throughout America, specifically among politicians.
Along the way, the pair is put under pressure by their personal lives, mob bosses, and the struggle to maintain their personal safety.
Due to the intricate nature of the plot, much background information had to be given. This led to a film of semi-long length. However, certain scenes of the film put viewers on the edge of their seats, making the boring parts in between bearable.
Not only was the plot full of twists and turns not even the best could predict, it was full of a star-studded cast. The ensemble was led by Bale, Adams, and Cooper, with Jeremy Renner and the always astounding talent of Jennifer Lawrence also among the main characters.
This talent throughout was strengthened by the appearance of other talented stars, such as the hilarious Louis C.K. and utterly convincing Robert DeNiro.
A factor that made this film deserving of its seven Golden Globe nominations, other than the great acting, was the overall setting and direction. The wardrobe and location decoration made it seem like the film actually took place in the 1970’s. Director David O. Russel, with other recent hit films “The Fighter” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” leads the way for yet another film with such vibrant characters.
With a surprise twist ending and remarkable acting throughout, the excessive length of the film was overshadowed by pleasing qualities.
