From Fruit Ninja to Words With Friends to Candy Crush, several major game apps have graced the electronic devices of gamers everywhere, especially in the high school age group. Creeping into their ranks is a new, intellectually based game, QuizUp.
QuizUp is a trivia game, with over 250 available topics that range from entertainment and sports to
literature, geography, and more. Popular among high school students are the trivia sets about TV shows.
“A lot of times I choose TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy or The Office, or simple ones like spelling and missing letters,” junior Carly Beck said. “I think it’s interesting to play topics you don’t know a lot about and learn all sorts of facts.”

Beck, juniors Andrew Kaiser and Jeremy Levy both enjoy the quizzes on The Office, as well as other TV shows such as House and Friends. Other popular topics include more educational themes, such as spelling, geography, or the ever-popular sports.
“I know a lot about the Office, so I am pretty good,” Levy said.
QuizUp, like many other apps, has a social element. Players can challenge other players through Facebook or Twitter, or can link with strangers for added competition.
“I think the best part of using the app is getting to play against both friends and strangers around the world,” Kaiser said.
The social interaction adds a competitive edge to the game, encouraging players to participate even more. Beck says she uses the app nearly every day, whether being challenged by a friend or challenging an opponent herself.
“[My favorite part] is that you can play your friends,” Levy said. “I am pretty good. I usually win.”
All three of the players agree that their respective skill levels depend on the topics, but not knowing the answers is part of the fun.
