Do not be mistaken: Beyonce is not in the building. However, senior Destiny Akins is considered by many to be just as talented. Akins has dedicated many of her years to the arts. Akins was involved in High Steppers for three years, and then proceeded to be involved in Pizzazz, choir, Straight Up and other music classes.
Music teacher Ben Silvermintz said his favorite memory of Akins is “her Pizzazz audition at the end of the 2010-11 school year. She sang the song ‘At Last,’ and it was awesome.”
Silvermintz also added that Akins is a joy in class. “She has developed the interesting habit of sharing random bits of knowledge with her teacher and classmates. This has proven to be both educational and entertaining,” he said. Silvermintz also commented on the evolution of Akins’ talent.
“She’s worked for it – which, if you ask me, is about the highest compliment you can pay a student, an athlete, a musician or any other type of performer,” Silvermintz said.
However, her voice isn’t the only thing taking the music hall by storm; she has an impeccable sense of fashion, according to Silvermintz. The teacher’s favorite memories of Akins, along with her interesting random facts, is the cookies she brought him from where she works.
She has large aspirations for herself – she has tried out for hit show “American Idol” and plans to try out for other hit singing show “The Voice.” Making either of these shows, or just making it as a singer, has been a major dream of hers.
Akins’s love for emitting her vocals was expressed when she sang at the Big Band Dance, which was one of her favorite moments of high school. As for her plans after high school, Akins plans to join the Air Force Reserve and attend Texas Southern University. “I can’t wait to leave PCH and take on the world!” she said.
