The boys soccer team opened the season with high hopes and that has lasted through the rigors of the season as they work towards a conference championship.
“I expected us to be good because I could see the talent on the team from freshman all the way up to seniors,” junior captain Josh Konecek said.
Konecek seemed to be accurate in his prediction as the team started the season with a 7 game win streak. A win streak that included victories over rival Parkway West and highly ranked Webster.
“I expected to do well but not nearly as well as we started out,” junior Quinn Conlisk said.
With winning streaks comes momentum and Conlisk could feel the positive effect on the team.
“Our moral was very high at the time and our chemistry was very good,” Conlisk said.
The team was flying high. However, too much of anything can be a bad thing. Konecek felt that the abundant confidence began to negatively affect the team as they began to cool off as they went 1-3-1 in a week span.
“I think that we just got into a habit of thinking that we could beat anybody and maybe taking opponents too lightly or just not finishing all of our chances,” Konecek said.
A little slump was not going to wreck the team’s season though.
“We realized that we are not going to have the perfect season,” Conlisk said. “We need to keep working to get the results that we want and it’s not just going to be handed to us every game.”
With this shifted attitude towards the season, the team works through the last couple days of the regular season as they eye the post-season.
“We don’t have to do anything specific,” Konecek said. “Just keep working hard and keep playing like we did at the beginning of the season.”
