After teaching almost every English class available at Central, English teacher Denise Fischer plans on retiring after this year. Fischer has decided to spend her time as a consultant at a school in Illinois, substituting and volunteering.
“I’m not a relaxer. I’ll find work somewhere,” Fischer said.
One of Fischer’s favorite memories from Central comes from when she first started teaching here in 1974. Fischer worked to have two Title IX teams, softball and basketball, be available for girls at Central. She coached until 1981. According to Fischer, she is going to miss the students the most when she leaves. After this school year, she hopes that students remember her sense of humor and the fact that she loves teaching the kids.
“I still think that Central has the best students in the district. Although we have some knuckleheads, we still have the greatest kids. They are the sweetest, most caring young adults I’ve met,” Fischer said.
One piece of advice Fischer leaves for the students is to make the most of their high school experience.
“There aren’t any make-ups or do-overs later in life, at least not to the same degree,” Fischer said. “Your high school years are the foundation for your future.”
