After a third place finish for the boys swim team last year at state meet, the team looks to have another victorious year in the pool. With the departure of key seniors Zach Biggs and Drew Larkins, spots are open for underclassmen to seize the moment.
“We have some new freshman coming in that have some experience given the depth we are known for. Plus we have (junior) Riley Brown , (senior) Nick Orf and plenty other swimmers back to provide depth needed to win meets,” senior Brandon Weissman said.
In addition, the team has a new coach in Mr. Kevin Fober who replaces Kevin Mabie. Joining him on the deck is coach Jeff Spector, who served as head coach for the Colts from 1983 to 2006. Fober says his focus is on day-to-day improvement.
“We basically agreed that we want every single guy from the year-round swimmer to the guy who is in his first time out; we want them better when they leave than when they walked in the door,” Fober said. “We don’t focus on getting a certain place in State; we want to focus on individual days and let the results take care of themselves.”
Fober credits the team success to the veteran leaders who serve as role models for the younger swimmers.
“Having guys like that in the pool brings everyone else up,” Fober said. “Whether they know it or not the others are watching them and their technique. We don’t even have to point it out. You cant say enough about it.”
With new leadership, the team still remains driven to get back to the state championship. Each morning the team arrives before the sun rises to make the most of the practice time they have.
“We really think we can go top three at State and bring back another state trophy. I think we are the best team in the state except for maybe Rockhurst out in Kansas,” Weissman said.
