David Odekunle, a sophomore track runner, describes his track experience as a two-year motivated sprinter who simply enjoys running.
“From last year to this year, it’s been really fun. I really like going to the meets,” Odekunle said. “Practice is fun, especially with all my friends.”
At this year’s Henle Holmes meet, Odekunle placed 7th in the Varsity Boys 100 meter dash with a time of 11:91. In the Varsity Boys 200 meter dash finals, Odekunle placed 3rd with a time of 22:86. It would make sense that someone with this kind of natural ability would have a passion for running, but for Odekunle, it’s a different story.

“It’s less of a passion, more of I don’t have anything to do,” Odekunle said. “I didn’t run track before and I’m having fun with it, so I have no reason to stop.”
Odekunle’s long-term and short-term goals for track and field are to get a record and to place at state. Being on the team for only two years, Odekunle has gained natural speed throughout his season.
“These are my first two years running track. In middle school the track coach, who was my math teacher, was trying to get me to join the track team,” Odekunle said. “I just kept saying no because I was super lazy in middle school.”

Odekunle has grown from being super lazy in middle school to being a hard worker. Odekunle is big on teamwork and working with others. With his team mates, the Varsity Boys Sprint Medley got 1st place with a time of 3:37
