From a spectator’s standpoint, Parkway Central soccer is off to a slow start, with a record of 2-8 as of print time. A couple of factors play into this. First of all, the team faced a tough schedule. Senior Captain Tommy Sasfai explains his feelings about the strength of this year’s schedule and some of the key roles the team is missing.
“We have a tough schedule,” Sasfai said. “It’s a little weird not having people like Brady around. He was someone who did a lot for us last year.”
One of the biggest struggles the team appears to be facing is scoring. The team has had its fair share of close games, and with a little bit of better offense the Colts will be able to win those close battles.
Senior Jacob Holthaus explains how close the team is to coming together and finally producing like they should.
“As a team some of our biggest struggles are finding a way to score,” Holthaus said. “We’ve been close numerous times but we just haven’t really found a way to put it in the back of the net.”
Holthaus has been injured for the first eight games of the season. On Sept. 27, Holthaus returned to the field and the Colts defeated Pattonville, with goals scored by David Lopez and Sam McNeil.
Head Coach Brian Adam talks about how important leadership is for the Colts as they seek to find success. Adam has been the head coach since 2014 and was an assistant for 13 years before that. He has had experiences with rough starts and is not worried for this season’s future; he is ready for his leaders to stand up and take charge.
“It’s one thing to be the captain,” Adam said. But it really requires a couple other players who are willing and able to join in with their experience as well.”
Even though the Colts may have struggled to find their footing, they aren’t worried about the start but instead are looking forward to future games and district assignments. Adam believes the team is ready to turn the season around and he has plenty of faith in his team to finish the season successfully.
“Every season is unique. Every player is unique, every team is unique,” Adam said. “What is the motivation? Is it us being prepared to go and make a deep state run? And in our district, we absolutely can.”
