The cheer team is known for cheering at the football and basketball games, although there’s so much more work that is done behind the scenes.
Earlier in the year, the cheer team won first place in a band chant competition for National Cheerleaders Association (NCA). Despite their outstanding performance, Co-Captain Julia Engelhardt believes there’s still room to grow.
She says that the teams’ goals are “improving on stunts as well as forming a team and showing what cheer really is. Many people try out, make it, and not realize the commitment level and then they quit and don’t give it a shot,” said Engelhardt.
Taking on the role as team captain can be hard, but Engelhardt tries her best to help the team out.
“It can be a lot. Sometimes it’s like being the secondary coach and keeping everyone on track. Having a positive aspect no matter how difficult it may be. It’s nice knowing your coach sees the work you’re putting in and being recognized as a role model,” Engelhardt said.
Coming back for her second year, sophomore Cailey Johnson recognizes the captain and the hard work she puts in.
“Julia is so great, so hard working, and such a great person. I would love to be like her,” said Johnson. “She is really kind and nice and understands when others have trouble, as well as sees things the coaches don’t. She looks out for everyone.”
Engelhardt and Elaina Malt are both co-captains this year and take on the responsibilities their coach and teammates need. Coach Peyton Ives sees how hard her captains work and understands the responsibilities they had to take on.
“My captains contribute by organizing some of the behind the scenes,” Ives said. “But they also help me with different tasks such as leading practice warm ups, having the inside scoop for things that I may need, and really being the point person while on the sidelines.”
Wrapping up her last year, Engelhardt has memories she will cherish for a lifetime.
“One of my favorite things about cheer is the bonds and long lasting friendships that I made.” Engelhardt said.
While Johnson enjoys the sport aspect, the real reason she continues to show up is because of the people.
“I’ve built such strong friendships with the team,” Johnson said. “I feel more comfortable now being a sophomore. Last year I felt like I didn’t know anything and was lost. This year feels like I can be more helpful and help the freshman and my teammates more.”
Looking ahead to the future, Coach Ives appreciates the hard work the girls are putting in and the impact they are making for the upcoming years.
“I really enjoy creating a program that is not only ‘Cheer’ but also incorporates community and team,” Ives said. “ Seeing my cheerleaders grow, succeed, and work as a team is always the best moment for me.”
