The varsity volleyball team is gearing up for an winning season under the guidance of Coach Tom Schaefer. With motivated players, a focus on growth, and a passion for the game, they are poised for success on and off the court.
“I am looking forward to working with a great group of guys who are excited, motivated, and love the sport of volleyball,” said Schaefer. “They bring their passion for the game every day to practice and work very hard. It is fun to watch and fun to be around.”
As the team prepares for the season, captain Aiden Ortmann shares his goals and experiences leading the team. Ortmann, a senior, reflects on his role and the evolution of his leadership within the team. Ortmann was the team leader in kills last season
“My goals for this season are to have as much competitive fun as possible, create a good environment and community, and to win a district championship,” Ortmann said.
Despite the challenges of balancing coaching and teaching, Schaefer finds great fulfillment in building relationships with his players.
“The best thing about being a coach is the relationships we build with our players. Many of my former players have come back to coach with me, and volleyball has been a huge part of my life,” said Schaefer.
Senior player Ben Lake shares his motivations and preparations for the season.
“What motivates me to play volleyball is knowing that every day I am practicing, I am getting better which will help both me and my teammates. I also have a lot of fun with the team and coaches which makes me want to be there,” said Lake.
Despite the challenges of balancing coaching responsibilities, grading, family commitments, and coaching, Schaefer remains dedicated to making the season memorable for his players.
“Managing coaching and teaching is definitely a challenge. Balancing that along with family and being at my daughter’s events makes for some late nights, but coaching is so rewarding it makes it all worth it,” said Schaefer.
Schaefer’s coaching philosophy of continuous improvement and teamwork resonates throughout the season, shaping the team’s identity and performance.
“ Every practice, every game is an opportunity to get better and strive for excellence together.”
As the season unfolds, Schaefer and the team face their first challenges on the court, testing their preparation and resilience.
“The early games are crucial for us to gauge our progress and make necessary adjustments. We expect tough competition, but it’s these challenges that will define our character and drive us towards our goals,” Schaefer said.
