Within Central’s track & field team, senior captain Kate Benoist stands out with her speed and determination. As she nears the end of her high school career, her leadership on and off the field has left a mark on her team, and the school.
Benoist journey in running began with a want to push her limits and improve as a runner. Over the years, she’s experienced a variety of different events, met many new people, gotten closer with her coaches. Notably, she’s most fond of the memories from her sophomore year track season and the joy that came with winning state.
“My best experience of the sport is my sophomore year when we won state,” Benoist said. “It was just an amazing feeling being part of a team that did that.”
One of the keys behind Benoist success is history teacher and track & field head coach, Ryan Banta. He has been at the head of Central’s cross country and track teams, leading them to numerous state titles and record breaking seasons over the years. Their partnership is built on a shared commitment towards hard work.
“Banta is the best coach I’ve ever had,” Benoist said. “He knows what he’s talking about and is so knowledgeable about the sport.”
For Benoist, every rave, every practice, every workout is an opportunity to push herself beyond her limits and improve herself. Her goals for this season are not only on winning medals, but challenging herself to be the best athlete and teammate she can be.
“Some of my goals for the season are going to state on my events, and being on the state winning team again,” Benoist said.
In addition to her competetive goals, Benoist is also focused on being a positive role model and leader for her teammates. Whether she’s offering encouragement during tough workouts, or leading my example, she wants to create a supportive team. As she prepares to close this chapter of her athletic career and transition towards college, she is determined to make the most of her final season, and leave it on a high note.
