Golf can be a very frustrating but rewarding sport. It requires long hours of commitment and dedication, but junior Evan Falke is very well-seasoned with the struggles and frustrations that come with playing the game. Last year he was on JV, but with this being his first year on varsity, he hopes to continue to improve and go even farther than last year. Falke believes his team has what it takes.
“I think if we all just have a good day at once, then we could have a good chance of going far,” Falke said. “I want to make it to state and do well in districts and conferences. I want to get more consistent and hopefully shoot lower scores by hitting better shots and making better choices on the course.”
Falke had an intense off-season where he worked on his swing and short game, like putting and chipping, as well as his strategy and ethic on the course. Over the off-season, Falke also watched a lot of other golfers to improve his own swing.
“I really like Jon Rahm’s backswing. I really like how he hits it short and controllable,” Falke said.
His dedication is shared by many others on the golf team, including a strong group of five: senior Jack Miller, senior Dillon Harris, sophomore Jackson Bober, sophomore Mukt Patel, and Falke.
“Between all of us, we can shoot good rounds. We have some good leaders. Jack and Dillon are both seniors, and Mukt is a very good golfer-so he inspires us to play well,” Falke added.
On April 16, the boys shot low at Oak Valley golf course. Three sub-80 scores and a total score of 309 led the team to win the Suburban Challenge Cup, where everyone contributed to their success.
“I had an awful front nine and an excellent back nine. I shot around an 85, which isn’t horrible, but it wasn’t a good contest score,” Falke said. “Dillon, Mukt, and Jackson both shot sub 80 rounds, Mukt getting second place with just one over, 72 or 73, I believe. We all just performed really well and it ended up being at the same time.”
