Many movies start with a bang, but ‘Pitch Perfect’ takes it to a whole new level. The music-centered film opens with two large a capella singing numbers with Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins as hilarious commentators.
‘Pitch Perfect’ chronicles the life of a struggling college a capella group and the experiences of college freshman Becca (played by Anna Kendrick). Becca is an aspiring DJ with a love of music who is eventually persuaded into joining an a capella group called the Bellas. Friendly and yet not so friendly competition from rival a capella group the Treblemakers fills the film. The Bellas are tested when they must overcome conflicts, and Becca learns more about herself and others after life with the group and love interest Jesse (played by Skyler Astin).
Many great comedians are scattered throughout this film, including Rebel Wilson, Elizabeth Banks, and Adam DeVine. Other actors, such as Brittany Snow, Anna Kendrick, Ben Platt, and Hanna Mae Lee pull off laughable comedy.
Numerous comedies go for the perfect combination of heart and hilarity, and ‘Pitch Perfect’ nearly achieves this. Some of the scenes that were meant to show growth of Becca or chemistry between her and Jesse came across as inauthentic and poorly acted.
Otherwise, those with more experience like Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine delivered countless laughs and wonderful reactions to events throughout the film. Many comedies attempt to be quotable, and this film delivered a few unforgettable quotes.
Overall, this film deserves 6 out of 10 stars. While some of the acting was mediocre, the performance of some of the background characters and weathered actors made this film enjoyable.
