Junior Khalen Saunders broke the previous shot put school record with 57’ 4” at Jim Schmuck Invitational.
“Before I threw it there was a competitor who threw a 56’ and that was out of my range. I was thinking to go out and compete with him,” Saunders said. “I came in and threw a 57’ 4’’. I guess it was all adrenaline that made me do it. It felt good to know that I won and that I beat the record.”
The record that stood before was 55′ 11.5″ by John Petroff in 2008. The record was on the board outside of the P.E. wing for five years but that is going to change.
“It feels cool, like I can come back and see my name on the board still, or I hope I can,” Saunders said.
Saunders has placed first at all of the meets his has participated in except for the first meet of the year where he placed second.
“I have been first consistently, for the rest of this season I plan to keep progressing and get to state and hopefully place,” Saunders said.
