The average Parkway Central High School student spends at most seven hours at school each day. Through a wide variety of extracurricular activities, sophomore Michael Rembold, ends up spending double if not more of that on a regular basis. He is a goalie on Varsity Soccer, kicker for JV and Varsity Football, and plays tuba as a member of the Marching Colts.
On his most stressful days, Michael ends marching band practice at 8:30 PM. He begins his day with marching band practice in the morning starting at 6:15. After school, he has soccer practice from 3:00-6:00 PM. Next, he stays after with his dad, and from 6:00-7:00 PM works on kicking for football. On Tuesday night, Michael also has additional band practice from 7:00-8:30 PM.
“Tuesdays are absolutely awful, yesterday I was changing and I fell asleep sitting straight up in a chair,” Rembold said.
Rembold says he was inspired by his older brother who played Varsity Soccer and was in marching band as well as his older sister who is a three sport varsity athlete. He also has a personal desire to be involved.
“I like to stay busy, I am not a person who likes to sit around and do nothing. It’s a lot of time and energy, but I make it work.”
A certain factor in helping Michael with his difficult schedule has been the support from his coaches and marching band director. He says they have all been extremely lenient thus far.
“All of them encourage me to be involved. Mr. Hoover, he’s really cool about it. He understands and helps me out. Yesterday [Tuesday], he walked in and saw me sleeping in the chair. He decided to let me keep sleeping.”
Other than those three team based extracurricular activities, Michael is also involved in Student Council, Drug Free Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and PCH Lead.
“I am able to be involved in more clubs because they are not as intense and usually only meet once a month,” Michael said. “The mornings where I have STUCO meetings I usually leave marching band practice early.”
Michael has been asked to join Speech and Debate Team, but he decided against it.
“I originally considered it, saying I would do the work during Academic Lab, but in reality there’s just no time.”
Come see Michael this Friday night as the Colts take on Ladue in the football opener. You may just see that one marching band performer spotting a football jersey.
“It’d be really cool to see a kid marching in his football uniform, but at the end of the day I would rather be with the rest of the team in the locker room.”
