Rain and cold weather couldn’t stop the football team from winning their third district title in three years and a chance to play Camdenton in the Class 5 quarterfinals.
“The weather actually favored to our advantage because we are predominantly a running football team and they were more a mixture of both but certainly passed a lot more then we did,” senior quarterback Zack Lazenby said.
There was a constant drizzle throughout the game with gusts of wind and 40 degree temperatures. Bad weather did not affect the run game from taking it to the Lions defense.
“The weather actually went in our favor since Zumwalt East was a passing team but we came out and did what we did best and just kept pounding them with our running game with Michael Slater rushing over 100 yards and Khalen Saunders rushing over 75 yards and myself rushing over 250 yards,” senior running back Augie Brooks said.
We scored 46 points with all six touchdowns coming on the ground, four from senior Augie Brooks and two from junior Michael Slater along with a field goal, missed PAT and a safety.
“I felt really good after a big win like that we knew they were going to be a physical team and come out confident from a 10-0 record but we weren’t going to let that stop us from being us,” Brooks said.
The team also had success on defense letting up zero first downs in the first half and only allowing a late touchdown with three seconds left making the final score 46-8.
“After winning the game I was really happy because one of our team goals was to win a district championship and we did with an all out team effort,” senior offensive lineman Brantley Lohkamp said.
The team will prepare to play Camdenton high school (10-1) on Saturday at home at 1:30.
“Since we played Camdenton last year we have a good understanding of the offense and defensive they run,” Lazenby said.
The team beat Camdenton 7-0 in last years quarterfinal match and hopes to return to the semifinals once again this year.
“We are watching some film on Camdenton and getting to work against what they do against our scout team,” Lohkamp said.
