Thanksgiving traditions vary, everything from weird food to certain games played after the meal. Some families and individuals have made it an annual ritual to gather every Thanksgiving at the Chesterfield Amphitheater to run in the Turkey Trot.
“Turkey Trot is an annual race in Chesterfield,” senior Jonathan Hwang said. “It includes a 5K and a fun run, which is one mile.”
Hwang is like many whose family decides to do this every year, making it a great family past time.
“I’ve been running the Turkey Trot since I was in third grade,” Hwang said. “This year I decided to take it slow and just run with my family instead of rushing ahead for a good time.”
Even though Hwang seldomly runs side-by-side with his family, he says that they all participate every year.
Junior Daniel Rasmussen agrees, saying this his family encourages him to do the Turkey Trot.
“I did it because it’s tradition for my family to do it,” Rasmussen said. “I’ve done it every year since I moved here in second grade.”
Even if not with their families, both boys still enjoy the event. Rasmussen believes that this is not inclusive for just the most elite, it is for everyone to have fun and support each other.
“The best part of the Turkey Trot is doing something with my friend and my family every year that is actually fun,” Rasmussen said. “I’d say people should go if they want even if they don’t run because you can just walk or jog, or even [stand on the sidelines to] watch the runners.”
The spirit of Thanksgiving is great among everyone at run, no one is discouraged from attending, even the family dog can participate. Hwang thinks that there is another great thing about running 5K on a day where one consumes so much food.
“I would highly recommend people to run this as it helps burn some of the weight that we’ll all gain tonight,” Hwang said.
