Joining an ensemble for the first time in his freshman year of high school, junior George Bohn participates in marching band, pep band, and jazz band throughout the school year.
Bohn played the drum set in middle school, but didn’t decide to join band until his freshman year of high school because a lot of his friends were in band.
As an audition, he had to play and sight read for band director Mr. Hoover.
“He was taking private lessons and he could read drum music, so it wasn’t like he had no skills,” Hoover said. “However where he’s at a disadvantage is playing mallet instruments like keyboard because he didn’t play that in middle school.”
Since freshmen year, Bohn has developed into an important part of band according to his peers.
“George is really important to band because as the drum chair, he provides the driving beat to the music,” senior Jack Connolly said. “He’s what keeps us in time. Without George we’d fall apart.”
Hoover further emphasized Bohn’s contribution to band.
“He has a great work ethic and a super positive attitude,” Hoover said. “He’s always upbeat and has really developed into a pretty good drummer too.”
Because marching band and pep band are in different seasons, the schedules don’t conflict which allows Bohn to participate in both. According to Bohn, marching band is significantly more rigorous than pep band.
“Marching band is every single morning and you have to get there really early, whereas pep band we don’t really practice, you just show up and play,” Bohn said.
Of all three, Bohn enjoys jazz band the most.
“I like the music we play a lot,” Bohn said.” And the group of guys is a lot of fun.”
