After an extended break due to the snow covered roads the basketball teams were able to begin conference play on Jan. 10. During the week leading up to the opening, each team had a game cancelled which led to extra days of inactivity.
On Jan. 6, the entire school was closed due to road conditions. Therefore, all athletic practices were also cancelled.
“The snow was hard to deal with because we were supposed to be playing and the teams couldn’t come out for a game,” senior Taylor Kennedy said. “Along with a cancelled game the snow cancelled a practice and it was harder to prepare for our first game back.”
Along with a cancelled practice, road conditions still caused athletes to stay home on Tuesday.
“It’s frustrating to cancel practices and then most people on Tuesday still couldn’t make it to practice because of the roads,” senior Kyle Disch said. “You don’t want to take days off and it creates a challenge to get back to the game.
When the roads began to clear the anxiety began to ease. For the girls team being all together was missed.
“I missed my team and an extended break really makes you miss the game more,” Kennedy said. “To get back in the gym and keep working hard with my teammates really felt good.”
While practice was a start towards getting back to normality, players felt they had missed out with a game cancelled.
“Finally getting back was good but cancelling a game made me mad, especially since it is my senior year and I don’t have many games left,” Disch said.
Once Friday night came the restlessness ended. After an extra week added to break the second half of the season was able to begin.
“Kirkwood is a really good team which made it a hard game,” Kennedy said. The snow caused many extra challenges and it felt like the beginning of the season again.”
