Imagine five boys lined up, gator balls in hand, preparing to throw them at groups of teachers and other students. No, this isn’t a bad middle school TV show or horror movie, it’s Student Council’s second dodgeball tournament, held on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Many of the teams were composed of upperclassmen, with several younger teams and teams of staff members mixed in.
“We were all at lunch at we saw the big banner, and thought we should do that,” freshman Jacob Brand said. “It would be fun. We thought that we might have a chance to win.”
Brand’s team, “The Michael Men,” placed second in the tournament after beating several teams of seniors and one of sophomores.
“Watching the freshman team, ‘The Michael Men’ beat two teams of upperclassmen was pretty entertaining,” STUCO advisor Ms. Jaclyn Gammon said. ”They almost won the whole thing.”
The upperclassmen competitors shared this sentiment.
“The most challenging [part] was playing the freshman who were surprising good,” senior Nick Lammert said.
Lammert’s team, “Happy Friends,” won the tournament by beating “The Michael Men” in the championship game. The team consisted of Lammert and fellow seniors Ben Sueoka, Johnny Naughton, Brantley Lohkamp, and Jason Piles.
“[I was] excited knowing that the last year of our group won the tournament,” Lammert said. “It was something to look back on.”
According to Gammon, many aspect of the tournament were memorable.
“I was impressed by some of the uniform.! Some teams got t-shirts made for the tournament,” Gammon said. “Also, the staff team, ‘The Help,’ was fun to watch. They really held their own.”
