Closing in on scoring 1000 points in his high school career, senior Nathan Biggs achieved the feat with 13 points in Friday’s district championship against the CBC. The Colts may have lost 60-47, but it didn’t diminish the strong season Nathan Biggs had. Wednesday, Coach Ricky Kirby out of first period and told him that he had won Suburban South Conference Player of the Year.
“[Coach Rick] Kirby was pretty pumped, when he pulled me out of class,” Biggs said. “He told me, ‘I’m not supposed to tell you until all the Suburban South Conference is done playing but I just can’t wait.’ I was really excited, but it came as a big of shock and was kind of cool.”
A year removed from making all-conference first team, Biggs upped his scoring this season to 15.9 points per game while shooting 53% from the field. Biggs also led the team in rebounding and steals, pulling in 6.7 boards per game, while pickpocketing 1.25 steals per game.
“He’s real intense,” senior Connor Kraus said. He pushes everyone else to work hard and get better. I’ve had to guard him a lot in practice, and he puts me to work a lot because he’s a load.”
Biggs has made an impact on the varsity level since his sophomore season. After spending his first year of high school basketball on the freshman team, he jumped over the junior varsity level, looking to compete at a higher level.
“The summer after sophomore year, I improved a lot,” Biggs said. My sophomore year, I was more of a role player and was just there to rebound and play defense. But on my summer team, it turned out I was one of the main scorers, so I improved my offensive and scoring ability a lot over the summer.”
As the season started to wind down, the Biggs family started counting down the points until Nathan reached 1000. Going into the district final, he was 11 points away.
“I would have been okay with not getting 1000 points if we won the game, but it was cool to get it in my last game of my high school career,” Biggs said.
Biggs is now 1 of 8 players in Parkway Central history to eclipse to 1000 point mark.
“I wasn’t sure if he would get 1000, because I think that he had to average a good number, and in the last 10 games for me he played really well for me. I think he and his brother in both rank in the top 8 scorers, so that’s a big accomplishment,” Kirby said.
