Happy Death Day 2U Movie Review
This weekend I saw the movie Happy Death Day 2U. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect going into seeing this movie. I saw the first movie of this sequel last year and I really enjoyed the mix of horror and somewhat rom-com that it had and was very excited to see how they could even make a sequel to a horror movie. I keep myself with low hopes heading into this because the majority of the time sequels are not as good as the first movie.
The first movie, Happy Death Day, is about a girl named Tree who wakes up on her birthday at college and gets killed by a guy in a baby mask only to wake up again the next day again on her birthday. This movie is a new take on the 1993 Bill Murray movie, Groundhog’s Day. Tree continuously wakes up again and again to figure out how to stop her killer, who ends up being her roommate but at the same time falls in love with a boy.
With all of this happening in the first movie, I didn’t know how they could do this again in a second. However, because the first movie left me interested for more, I kept my head high. After the trailer for the sequel in repeat including 50 Cent’s song “In Da Club” on every streaming network, like Hulu, I couldn’t get the movie out of my head. Therefore, I knew I had to see it.
The sequel started with a different character, Tree’s boyfriend’s roommate and he get’s stuck in the loop where he gets killed. It all leads to them finding out that it was his science project that started the whole loop in the first place. When Tree gets sent into another dimension after trying to fix the machine, she realizes what it really important in life. They portrayed a deep message that it is important to live in the current time and to leave the past in the past.
I think that the movie was pretty good. The thing that surprised me was that the movie was not what I expected at all. Going into the movie I expected the movie to be not as good as the first and kind of copying the first movie. But while the movies were similar in concepts, the sequel took a more scientific turn. This is not a movie to watch unless you have seen the first one, it probably wouldn’t make sense. I like that the movie kind of explains the first movie but also adds a message to the movie by itself.
Preferably, I don’t know if I would like the scientific aspect of the movie as much as the horror aspect. Yet, if you are a person who doesn’t typically like scary movies but would like to see one this is perfect for you. Blumhouse Productions created this movie and the movies that they normally produce are horror but aren’t too scary for the viewers. I like that it is scary but it wouldn’t be leaving me scared after watching. If you think this movie would be too scary for you, that is probably not the case.
I normally like the scary aspects of movies and I think that Happy Death Day 2U kind of ignores the horror. In the first movie there were a bunch of jump scares that added to the horror but those were all left out in this movie. I personally wouldn’t say that this movie is scary at all and would seem almost like childish scary for a person who watches a lot of scary movies. But at the same time, I like that the sole purpose isn’t to only scare but to also add an aspect of romance which I really liked. I also really enjoy that I got to follow up on the relationship between Tree and her boyfriend.
Overall, I would say that this movie was good for what I was expecting. I was definitely a lot more impressed with what the movie delivered than I would’ve predicted. I would like to have a little more horror and less of the scientific aspect of the movie. This movie had some catchy songs and the message was important for people to know. I would give this movie a rating of 3 out of 5 horseshoes.
