Storming into the dome after a 21 point victory over conference rival Webster Groves, the Colts were halted by a score of 51-14 in the Missouri class 5 football championship.
Central was defeated by the Lee’s Summit West Titans, who also beat the Colts for the championship in 2007. The Titans also won the state championship in 2010.
From the get go, the Titans utilized a strong run game. Junior Ryan Williams racked up 122 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns. After stumbling to a 27-0 deficit, senior Jonathan Bonner caught a screen pass from senior Zack Lazenby and ran it 57 yards for the score. Going into the half, the Colts trailed 30-7 and were stifled by the Titan defense the rest of the game.
Lazenby threw three interceptions, all to Missouri recruit, Logan Cheadle. Along with this, the Colts only tallied 72 yards rushing. Senior Augie Brooks, who rushed for over 2000 yards and had 38 touchdowns on the season gained just 34 yards. Lazenby rushed for the only other touchdown for Central in the final moments of the game.
Despite the lopsided score, the Colts managed to only allow 54 yards passing. They also held Nebraska recruit, Monte Harrison to only 2 catches for 14 yards.
Although the championship wasn’t close, the football team won a school record 13 games on the season. They lost only to Webster Groves, which was later avenged in the state semifinals. 6 shutouts were recorded for a defensive unit that allowed only 7.4 points per game.
Led by seniors Augie Brooks and Khalen Saunders the offense was predominantly controlled through the run game. Lazenby also threw for 11 touchdowns and Bonner had 17 sacks to anchor the defense.
The Colts will graduate 17 seniors this season.
